Home Base Austrian Villages

We recommend that when you travel Europe's country roads, you stay in a quiet, untouristed village. Here are three of our favorite country road villages:  Wenns, Bramberg am Wildkogel, and Hopfgarten in Defereggen.

Wenns

Stay with Gerda and Werner at

Haus Hochzeigerblick. ($72/night)

  • Visit the Pitztal and Kaunertal Glaciers

  • Drive 90 minutes to the Swiss Tarasp Castle.

  • Drive 90 minutes to the Italian walled village of Glorenza.

  • Tour the Landeck Castle.

  • Visit the shops and restaurants in Landeck

  • Or just relax and visit the shops and restaurants in Wenns.

Hopfgarten in Defereggen

Stay with Hildegard at Elsenhof farm. ($67/night)

  • Hike to the mountain huts on the westside of the Großglockner. This hut is just one of many near the village of Kal am Großglockner.

  • Visit the shops and restaurants in Lienz

  • Tour the Bruck Castle in Lienz.

  • Visit the Lienz Dolomites mountains. 

  • Drive an hour to the opposite of the Großglockner and visit the village of Heiligenblut.

  • Take a day to drive the circle route to experience the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. We only recommend this in the offseason. During the summer this drive is crowded with cars and tour buses.

  • Hike to trails to the Großvenediger.

  • Have lunch in the shadow of the Großvenediger (12,028') at the Alpengasthof Venedigerhaus Innergsohlöss.

Bramberg am Wildkogel

Stay with Daniela and Klaus at Großscharhof farm. ($65/night)
