Northern Italy

Trip summary: We stayed in five one-bedroom apartments and one B&B.

The average price $82 per night, with the highest we paid being $108. Drove

1500 miles getting about 40 mpg, and paid about $7.50 to $8.00 per

gallon for gas. Generally, we skimp on food. We buy food at local grocery

stores (a fun experience in itself) and eat breakfast and dinner in the

apartment. We splurge on a big lunch. Our per day cost, including

accommodations, car, gas, toll roads, and meals, was about $125 per

person per day, excluding airfare. Many tour companies charge from

$350 to $500 per person per day, excluding airfare.
