Small town tourist information offices are a valuable resource for finding sights unknown to most American tourists. We found this WWII German fort on the Norwegian island of Karmøy, north of Stavanger, in a local brochure. After driving through beautiful farmland, we parked and walked less than one kilometer to the fort. The German military installed four large artillery guns on the circular cement pads to threaten shipping and protect their occupation of Norway. To protect the fort, they positioned machine gun nests with effective fields of fire. Based on the logbook, it is rarely visited, and we had the entire place to ourselves.
