The Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy are dramatic limestone peaks the ascend from the alpine landscape.  They reside principally in three Italian provinces; Belluno, South Tyrol, and Trentino.  Before World War I, South Tyrol was part of Austria, and currently has a majority of German speakers and the Austrian alpine culture.
